The All Progressives Congress Media Network (APC-MN) strongly condemns the purported meeting convened by the Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Council,Mr Aniefiok Nkom,to receive decampees into the APC.
This action is a blatant disregard for the party’s constitution and a usurpation of the powers vested in the Local Government Area Chapter Chairman. According to the APC constitution, only the *APC Local Government Area Chapter Chairman* has the authority to convene meetings to receive decampees.
The Local Government Council Chairman, who has yet to join the APC, cannot arrogate this power to himself. We urge the Local Government Council Chairman to respect the party’s constitution and submit to the constituted authorities.
If he cannot adhere to the party’s rules, he has the option of remaining in the PDP. A decampee cannot convene an illegal meeting to receive other decampees into the party.
We call on the party’s leadership to intervene and call the local government council chairman to order. This will prevent unnecessary crises within the party and ensure that the APC remains a disciplined and law-abiding organization.
It is too early for the local government council chairman to start creating factions or vying for power within the party. Having not even formally joined the APC, such actions are premature and potentially divisive. We urge him to focus on building the party from the grassroots and working towards unity and progress.
We advise the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Council Chairman to take a cue from Governor Pastor Umo Eno, who has demonstrated exemplary leadership by adhering to the party’s constitution and showing respect to the party’s leadership. By doing so, the Council Chairman would be contributing to the stability and progress of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.
